About us
Hamish and Lucie purchased the Moutere Merino stud and part of the property off family in 2022 and changed the stud name to M in a Diamond Merinos after the original wool brand. The diamond shape has been associated with the stud since the early days. We produce high quality New Zealand merino wool.
The Moutere Merino stud was founded by Andrew Jopp in 1904 by the purchase of 83 ewes, 31 lambs and one ram at the Gladbrook dispersal sale. In 1904 there were 26 Merino flocks recorded in the NZ Flock Book, only 1 is in existence today. While the stud registration lapsed in 1913 the stud sheep continued to be run as a special flock and in 1925 was re-registered as flock 83 then was transferred to flock 71 in 1927 which is where it remains today.
The property name Leaning Rock Downs Station was chosen after the bulk of the land was purchased by Hamish’s Grandfather in 1979 and run separately from Moutere Station throughout the 1980s. Under Andrew Jopp, Leaning Rock won the wether trial in 1987.
